Any oilfield guys on here?

Take it for sure man. I work in the oil and gas industry up in Alberta, Canada. Im a little younger then you(21), have been programming full time for a year and a half(300+ hours a month) The rates are all over the place, with specialized programmers making >120$ an hour, but most average around 70$ an hour It can get a little stressful sometimes though, because like stated before, time is lots of money here. I dont think you can go wrong workin in oil and gas, but then again, its all i know

hey nswu, do your guys work on flow computers also? what is the best way to go about putting in a application? I looked online and they didnt have any scada or automation positions open..

Sure do, the website is the best way, even it if doesnt show any openings, email in resume anyway. Most openings are filled before it can be posted to website.

I work in Power Generation, and frequently get involved in remote or offshore oil and gas, a few things,

Hard work and long hours, but you are usually working with top notch people who also work hard.

Make your code solid and well annotated, remember someone else will have to work on it, on no one I know in that business appreciates someone who isn't willing to make sure someone can come behind and keep things working.

Safety is king, make sure it really works, because in many cases peoples lives depend on it.

The travel can be great, but it eventually gets old, but it paid for my house and retirement is in sight.

Good luck!
