I would not consider PCS7 suitable for 'basic training' purposes
. A repeater is a box that amplifies and refreshes the communication signal. An IM is a input-output node.

When you are communicating Remote I/Os in Profibus , and You have doubt about the Communication Problem for a long distance
When you plan to expand your I/Os and there is no space in the existing Racks and you plan to add a new Rack
