Can a Cisco switch be CIP messaged to retrieve status information

We have many CISCO and STRATIX switches in our process network. The Stratix switches have AOPs that enables us to use our Rockwell PLCs to gather information about the switch. I have heard that the Cisco switches can be queried via CIP messaging to gather similar information about the switch as well. Does anyone have experience with messaging a Cisco switch for status information from a ControLogix PLC?

Thank you!
David

Thank you for the reply. That is my understanding as well, and we HAVE purchased some of those industrial versions of the Cisco products (we have the Stratix products as well). Our I.T. department has, in all its wisdom, has requested we purchase the industrial Cisco (we are actually going back and forth on which to purchase, so we have a mixture of both). We know we can monitor the Stratix switches in our PLCs (via the AOP) however we would ALSO like to monitor the industrial Cisco switches as well. Since CIP messages are supported in the Cisco switches I was in hopes someone would read this and make suggestions (and possibly code) on how to extract that information from the Cisco brand switches.

Cheers, David

Hmm, I don't think you can do this.

Cisco switches can recognize CIP data and prioritize it. But there isn't an AOP. That is the whole purpose and selling point of the Stratix over a Cisco-branded switch. The ability to integrate it with your Logix controller just like any other I/O module is a big feature of the Stratix. If Cisco could do the same thing, why would anyone buy the Stratix instead of the Cisco device?

Likewise, the Cisco devices have features the Stratix models don't have.

I have never done this, but I was curious and this is what I found:

ODVA has EDS files for the IE2000 and IE4000 series. Probably has more as well.

https://marketplace.odva.org/products/897-cisco-industrial-ethernet-4000-series-switches

I downloaded the IE4000 eds and was able to add it as an I/O device in a Studio 5000 project. It did not include descriptions of the data, though. Unfortunately, I don't have the hardware to test anything.

This post suggests that the up to date EDS file is embedded in the firmware of the switch, downloaded from the web interface.

Some of the things I've read said that CIP is an option in the switch configuration and is turned off by default.

This isn't the easy answer you're looking for, but hopefully it helps.
