controllogix serial port and Blackbox's modem splitter

Hello everyone, I have a project which use AB controllogix and Blackbox's modem splitter. we need to connect controllogix 's serial port to modem splitter. The question is that if I can connect the controllogix by DF1 protocol. or I need to configure the serial port as user mode to simulate the modbus slave mode?
