Hi everyone,

I need some help please on counter configuration and 'math' using encoder as an input in a paper cut-to-length application. anyone knows how to compute the scale factor for the counter or is there any formula that normally be useful for this type of application? my first time to encounter such devices.

details i have on hand:

encoder output: 500 pulses per revolution
diameter of wheel connected to encoder: 10 cm
cutting length: 1 meter

thanks in advance guys...

Well the short answer is 1591.549430918953478495424044098...but maybe you can tell us a little more about what formulas would be useful for your application

Got the same answer here. Pi does make for a messy answer.

Hint: if you know the diameter of the wheel then you can calculate how far it will travel in one revolution. If you know the pulser per revolution then waaallllaaahhh you get the answer every 1591.549430918953478495424044098 pulses on your encoder you have one meter...

Tricky part...figuring out when you hit the .549430918953478495424044098 part of the last pulse. See that is neither a 1 or a 0 so things will get messy at this point.

Think you may need to modify something...my suggestion would be the wheel....Always have to reinvent the wheel....

Good Luck (y)

I'm not to sure of this so I should'nt be replying but, I think if you know the speed of the paper that would help. A silly example is: if paper speed = 50 centimeters per second and the encoder count is 500 ticks per second, then 1 meter would = 1000 ticks or 2 seconds. It's not that simple so don't use that.

okay this means that 500pulse=10cm, so using ratio and proportion formula 1 meter = 5000pulse thus the factor is 1/5000.

I hope this will help you.
