Need to add servo control

Depending on the torque you need, you could use the Kinetix 5000 with VPL motors.
You can also use an Ethernet/IP Encoder, (if you're willing to spend the money), and that way the gear would be very easy to implement...
How much easier? I may be able to secure the money as long as its not too crazy.

Be careful with Ethernet/IP encoders. Not all of them support motion control in logix. Looks like maybe the 842E-CM does now. Not sure where the price points are depending on your torque needs it might make sense to use one of these and a small cheap kinetix350. Otherwise I seem to remember some of the AB drives being 1.5 axis. Supporting a standard encoder wired to the drive as a feedback only axis. Think this was the 6500 back when I was looking, not sure if it's available in the newer 5x00 stuff.

Ok, so for me I would do:

kinetix 5500 and vpl motor (you connect the drive throw ethernet/ip)

Ethernet/IP encoder

You need to check if the vpl motor series is enough for the torque you need...

I recently commisioned a machine with Kinetix 5500 servos and VPL motors with electronic gearing on L33ERM. Prior to the machine commissioning I tested with L72 and EN2T. Everything worked great.

I found some sample code on ABs site to get me started. Prior to this I had no servo experience, but have plenty of PLC experience.

Sounds to me like you have the basic controller equipment you need already. And you've decided you want to stick with Rockwell. I'd talk to your AB distributor, they should have a drives and motion specialist that can help you out with detailed equipment spec. The hardest part of This is going to be figuring out torque and inertia which will lead you to which motor gearbox and drive family you need to use.
