So I have been on site this week doing integrations, and issue came up where I need to talk to an old PLC5.

I tried using the path I usually use which is a "2" followed by a comma and then the IP address of the remote PLC. This resulted in an error. After a suggestion from one of the hold hands on site I tried some different numbers, 3 ended up being the magic one. After looking though the help file it seems to have something to do with "Channels" but I didn't find and explanation of what EIP channels are.

So can some one explain what these EIP channels are and why you need to use a different one on a PLC5?

What's the ControlLogix or CompactLogix controller or Ethernet network module ?

It is likely that you're using a CompactLogix with more than one physical network connector, like one of the modern 5069 series configured for independent ports instead of a ring port. Those can have Port 2 or Port 3 as their CIP port number depending on how they are set up.

The fact that it's a PLC-5 target is just a coincidence.

Mine nine is a 5069-L310ER so yes it is one of the new ones.

Ethernet card/port was the first thing the other guy though of, they have all ControlLogix.

The thing is the plant network is on Port 1 and the Local IO network is Port 2. And I swear I have used 2, before when talking to a 1769 from by 5069.

Maybe I have to try it out with my bench PLCs when I get home.
