Micro 850 RS232 Communication

Hi all,
I am trying to receive data from a Keyence SR1000W barcode scanner to a Micro850 over the built-in RS232(ASCII) serial port. I am starting by reading the amount of characters in the serial buffer but on a successful read I am not receiving any data.
I was able to read incoming data on an AutomationDirect CLICK PLC, but I would like to use an AB for this project. Is there something I am missing?
