Hi

Is it possible to program a Compactlogix 1769-L32E with RSLogix 500, or do I need to purchase a Studio 5000 package?
On a very tight budget and hoping to connect the Compactlogix 1769-L32E to a Red Lion G307K200.

No, you will need RSLogix 5000 to program that PLC. The L32 can only be flashed up to V20 firmware. Studio 5000 started at v21.

RSlogix 5000 not 500?

Doesn't RSLogix 5000 come as part of Studio 5000?

Does anyone know what sort of price I am looking at to purchase Studio/RSLogix 5000 if that is the case. UK price please

*IF* you only need to program the CompactLogix AND you only need ladder, you can get away with the mini edition.
It was ~850USD last I checked. No idea on the UK pricing.

Okay.

RSLogix 5000 is the programming software for Logix family PLC's, including the Compact Logix, from firmware versions 1 through 20.

Logix Designer is the programming software for Logix family PLC's, including the Compact Logix, from firmware versions 21 through to the most recent version (29 at the time of this post).

Logix Designer is one component of the Studio 5000 Suite, which also includes View Designer and may in the future include other components.

RSLogix 5000 and Logix Designer are in essence the same thing, one older and one newer. The difference is, you buy RSLogix 5000 as a standalone item, and you buy Logix Designer as part of a Studio 5000 package.

A license for Logix Designer is a license for all versions of RSLogix 5000 and Logix Designer, from version 1 through to, in theory, forever. When you order Studio 5000, you will get a DVD with the most current revision (again, version 29 at the time of writing). To get the previous revisions, you can either ask your distributor to burn the previous versions you required onto a DVD for you (they should do it for free), or you can download them from the RA website, using your support contract details.

Clear as mud?

Edit: and yes, as other have mentioned, you only need the lite version to program a Compact Logix, which is significantly cheaper than other versions.
