Hello,

Sorry maybe a little off topic, but I would like to know if there is any software (free would be nice, but not neccessary) that allows you to design hardware motor controls? You know have symbols for E-stops, selector switches, push buttons, solenoids, overloads, etc...
If not what do you more experienced guys use when you document your systems.

Thanks

I use a regular CAD (Computer Aided Drafting) program for drawing the schematics and panel layout drawings. You could get by cheap using simething like Visio, but I'm not sure how much functionality you'd loose. Finally, there are packages available as AutoCAD add-ins or stand alone (Promise-E is one) that do it all, but you are talking higher price. If you really want cheap and your time is free you could do it with PaintBrush - it's all straight lines and circles after all!

I suggest AutoCAD lite or DesignCAD or another entry level CAD program will be the most flexible.

If you're looking to use a program for free (21 day trial) it's the only thing I've tried so I can't compare. The Constructor

It has decent functionality and can do i/o, field wiring, and code for plc. There is even an "on switch " so you can test the circuit.

If all I was going to do was create schematics I would look at http://www.automationstudio.com
or
http://www.smartdraw.com (not as sophisticated)

IF you already have AUTOCAD then look at things like
http://www.viadevelopment.com
which is sold by http://www.automationdirect.com

I use to use Constructor (which was mentioned) but it hasnt evolved that well compared to the evolvement of the price.

To me using CAD software is cumbersome and awkward when developing schematics/electrical prints for machines...to this day for whatever reason they are developed primarily for mechanical/architectural use.

pcschematic

pcschematic is also available in english and looks pretty good.
i am using caddy as this was very good price only 300 dollars for small version but it works for me only 25 pages.

tlvaun, www.radicasoftware.com have an excellent add in that will speed up your motor drawings circuits tremendously.

You create a commonly used circuit once, and it automatically numbers your tags correctly. 30 day Trial available.
