PLC documentation

Dear all,

I have been asked by my boss to establish PLC documentation,according to ISA Draft 5.06.01,Functional Requirements Documentation for Control Software Application.Please give me basic hints how to and where to start?

Did you read ISA Draft 5.06.01? Or, are you having trouble finding it?

I'm not familiar with that document, but it sounds like your boss is trying to give you a standard set of rules for your PLC work. He probably wants everyone to be able to understand your program quickly and easily. A common format will help with that!

Thanks for that link. I've always used GAMP as a standard for creating an FRS. It's good to see that the ISA is getting a standard too, and one that is a bit more geared to process control, instead of the more generic "software", which can be a bit too heavy on the IT/database stuff.

This post was the first time I'd heard of that document. I already do about 80% of what there advocating. Just in my own custom way. It takes time up front but when working on Large process control projects, you have to have everything written down. With 200 plus I/O points, and lots and lots of ladder,function blocks, sequencial control etc..., there's noway you can remember all the specifics, alarms, faults, interlocks, order of operation etc...

I would assume that anyone doing larger projects already has something similar to what the spec is calling for. You just can't function without it.

I remember seeing documentation once. It looked like a torn brown paper bag, and had crude ladder logic in pencil. Someone had programmed a 9030 with a handheld, so they thought it needed documentation.
