CAn I ping an SLC 5/05 from my laptop? I also am having problems making rslinx work on the ethernet port but works ok on the RS232 port.

Yes, if you have the masks and subnets matching correctly.
RSLinx requires that you setup a routing table and thats where many folks get bogged down.

If you always work with the same plc's (same IP addresses) I've had good success with adding the IP addresses to the PC's host file. Then RSlynx will automatically add them to the routing table. This works well with dedicated PC's used as SCADA nodes, but I would not advise it for Laptops that access many networks.
