I sure could use some help communicating with a PV550, I have a 2711-B5A9 with 2 RS232 ports one for printer and one for communication and download. I have tried talking to it using RSLinx and DF1-1 Driver with a a 1747-cp3 cable, I have tried using this with a null modem. I have tried using my pcm card and using a gender changer with my 1784-PCM cable. I have commicated with it in the past, (4 months ago), and remember having to change something to be able to talk to it using a RS232 cable, but looks like my old age is catching up and I can not remember what I did to talk to it. I do remember the last time took me forever to establish communication also. Any hints or suggestions?o_O

Think from memory that unit uses DH485 not DF1 with a RS232 connection.....Try using the PIC driver in Linx........

Hope this helps (y)

KidBlue is right. It is a DH-485 unit.
What I always do to figure out this is open up Panelbuilder 32 and create a new Project. On the screen where you are selecting the PV and its Protocol, It will be displaying the part numbers above the selection box that matches the protocol. I find this as an easy way to check or build part numbers, .... easier than finding the correct literature or manual anyways.

$#*! No go! I found my notes from when I talked to it last time and followed them. Still no joy. I am wondering if the PV has a problem. Thanks for your help anyway. Tomorrow is another day maybe my luck will improve.

To program a PV550 on RS232 you need an NC13 cable, this is a straight-through RS232 cable. If its DH485 on rs232 then use RS linx and the PIC driver. If its RS 232 DF-1 then use the DF1 driver. On the older panelviews I think the second rs232 port is printer only. The cp3 cable doesn't work with panelviews.

I have a 2711-B5A9 with 2 RS232 ports one for printer and one for communication and download.
The main communication port for that model is DH+

Manual, check chapter 1 page 3: http://literature.rockwellautomation.com/idc/groups/literature/documents/um/2711-um014_-en-p.pdf

With DH+ you will need to use PCMK or some adapter.

The RS232 port can be used for file transfer but as stated you will need a straight thru cable like the 2711-NC13. From what I can see it should use the DF1 point to point driver.
