I'm rebuilding an old press with some new hydraulics.
Most of it is done, but I want to add a thermostat for the oil.

Actually since I already have the SLC 5/01 & PV600, I would like to have the actual temperature Displayed on the HMI.
Do I need to buy the 1746 NT4 Thermocuple input?
Can I get a thermocouple with a 4-20 mA output and connect it into the 1746-NI4 Analog input card that is already there instead?

Another suggestion is to use an RTD instead of a thermocouple. Perfectly adequate for the temperature ranges you are looking at, and they are less prone to noise and don't require special wire or terminal blocks. Here is the signal conditioner for them:

Another possibilty is a device from Dill Instruments I've used for this service many times. They even have an RTD with a built in 4-20 mA transmitter.
