have a question that I hope someone may have a answer to.

We have quite a bit of compression type equipment, not very large, they are around 10-20 tons each.
At the moment, they use hydraulic cylinders, pumps etc.

Has anyone every done a compression type operation using a servo motor or electric motor? If so, could you possibly give some suggestions.
All of these units are controlled with micrologix 1100 plc's, and have plently of extra I/O points.

thanks

The latest and greatest injection molding presses are all "electric" or servo driven. No hydraulic oil on the floor and quiet. When I saw one run about 5 years ago I was really impressed.
You didn't mention your product but you may be on to something.

Servo Motor controlling a Ball Screw with a sufficient gear ratio to give you the required force. You can tell the servo to move to a position or a current level (ralative to force). If you network your servo you will not need the I/O
