Greetings all!

As mentioned in an earlier post, my factory is getting ready to shut down at the end of next year. I've got an opportunity opening up in the Lousiville area, and was wondering if any of our 10 million + members have any thoughts on the area - cost of living, homes, job opportunities in general. A notion on prevailing wage for guys in our line of work would also be helpful.

I've tried googling this stuff, and it's pretty unreliable. I look for condos, get nothing but duplexes, look for wage stats and get everything from $40k to $120k. Pretty vague.

Any info would be helpful.

Thanks!

TM

You gave up the "freelance" idea?
Nothing available in the Tampa area?
Whats your relationship with the electrical distributors?
Either them promoting your freelance idea or them hiring you

Tim,

I once lived southwest of Lousiville in Bowling Green, KY many years ago, and have visited Lousiville serval times. Anything I could say about conditions may be outdated. The climate will be colder than Florida, but delightfully mild in the spring, fall, and summer months. Louisville, a river town on the Ohio River is a mixture of Northern Yankee and Southern Bluegrass cultures. It is large enough to contain a wide mixture of industries, events, sports, and attactions. Generally, around Louisville, bourbon whiskey distilleries (Brown-Forman) are big, as is the health care industry (Humana). Horse breeding, horse training, horse racing are major players in the surrounding area (Kentucky Derby). Tobacco was once king (RJ Reynolds), but is now a secondary industry.

Tim I have 31 years in Louisville. You can drop me a PM later Monday. Do you have allergies if so stay away. 3 days after you move here you will be sick. This area us commonly called the Ohio valley. I prefer to call it the dust bowl.
With those downsides here are a few ups. The second largest fireworks expo, the KY Derby. You can be watching NASCAR on a Sunday and horse races on a Saturday. There are a lot of small mom and pop businesses around still.
The best Bourbon is made here.

I had a tonsillectomy last Thursday so I am kind of out of it now.

If you do decide to move, avoid living where you would need to cross the Ohio river to get to/from work. The I-64 bridge over the Ohio is currently closed/condemned until repairs can be made. Needless to say, traffic has been a nightmare for a few months now.

And a +1 on allergies, this is about the worst place to live if you suffer from them.

That said, I like it here. I'm just south of Louisville and travel there often. Traffic is never too bad (except for the temporary problems with the bridge) and the cost of living is reasonable IMO.

Hmmm, every place I have ever lived (except Hawthorne, Nevada) was supposedly "the worst place to live for allergy sufferers".

Hawthorne is so dry that nothing much grows there, but still there are the dust storms that do not cause allergies, but make breathing difficult.

As a U of L grad I think you will find Louisville a great place to live and work. Louisville has the hospitality of a small town with all amenities of big city. Horse racing, Casino’s across river, night life, great river front, 4th street live…
Feel free to PM me and I can tell you more.
