I seen that Red Lion has new Kadet2 HMI's. Look very nice, higher resolution/color (graphics show up correctly), ethernet on the 4" HMI. Can't wait to use one.

However; the emulator seems to be disabled in Crimson for them. I'm hoping, that perhaps it's just something missed in the software change; but, I'm suspecting that it is on purpose.

Please Red Lion, I understand that you can't give away all the features on the cheaper line. But the lack of the emulator is in no way going to encourage me to go with a G308 or G306 over a G307K2. It only annoys me when I have to have another instance open just for testing scripts.

The emulator in Crimson 3 Build 502 seems to be having problems, for all G3 models, not just the newest Kadets. OkiePC mentioned that he was also having problems in this thread as well. I sent Redlion tech support an email about it last Tuedsay and haven't heard back yet, which is unusual - Redlion tech support is usually very prompt.

The K2's do look really nice. And the pricing is very attractive - no one comes close for the features. RedLion had done an excellent job on the product. I'm looking at adding one into my current project.

I was able to open the emulator on the G3 models and the older G304k and G306k.... I'm hoping you're correct and it is just a software glitch.

As I said, I understand that all the features will not be present on the Kadet series, but not having the emulator is just annoying

Do you have to be a member of an exclusive club to get these terminals advertised to you ?

If I had a new product that looked this good, I'd be splashing a product profile and features/benefits PPT all over my website.

Instead, they just show up as though they've been there all along; you have to know there was a G306K in the past to notice it's been replaced by the G307K2.

I suppose this is great for existing customers, but those of us who use only a handful of Red Lion displays (and a truckload of Brand A displays) aren't going to know about the new HMI's except by hearsay.

The G307K200 has two USB Ports, an SD card slot and a headphone jack.

Just got off the phone with RLC Tech. He said none of these are functional and there are no plans to make them functional. They just come with the hardware like that from the manufacturer in Taiwan.

Oh well. Maybe if enough people shout, RLC might do something about in the future.

Yes, if you can't emulate the K2, then stay with build != 502.000. I also sent an email, and got a response "thanks for the heads up", but they didn't ask for the cd3 files.

For me, I have one installation of a G304K, and I see it as free Ethernet if the little booger ever falls over and dies, but then we already have a spare on the shelf...I have an upcoming project I can use it for, then get the K2 as a replacement...

Interesting that the Maple Systems and Red Lion hardware look identical. I wonder which one came first, or if they are parallel branches of another device ?

The more I use Crimson 3, the less I like FactoryTalk View ME.

What I'd love to see from Red Lion is an "introduction to Crimson 3 for FactoryTalk users". A wiki or some sort of knowledgebase collection that illustrates various functions (or limitations) in FactoryTalk View and explains how similar things are done in Crimson.

There's a window of about a year before RA has the PanelView 5000 product out, where Red Lion could harvest PanelView users by the bushel.

I think there are some youtube videos that are like a quick start.

I wish I could just edit their manual for my own sake. Add the undocumented variables and fill out the examples with more "meat"...

I have never used Maple Systems software, but if it's not like Crimson 3.0, I won't like it.

I need to google Eurotherm next...

Good point about the YouTube videos... there's probably a "follow us on YouTube" button on their website, but not much promotion of it.

A Wiki is all about community addition... I think that would help a lot with well-documented and described examples.

Red Lion's User Manual and Reference Manual are good, and Crimson 3's context-sensitive Help is outstanding.

Where both are lacking is that a lot of the documentation is "clear once you know it". I suppose with a Reference manual that's by design.

That's where "meaty" examples help new users a great deal. It's very difficult to be the expert on something and effectively get down to the new user level.

But it's easy to wave your hands and say "All you need to do is..." when you're not the one who has to do it. :)

This is the model from Maple Systems that is EXACTLY the same as the G307K200: http://www.maplesystems.com/graphic-hmi/7-inch-ethernet-widescreen-touchscreen-hmi.htm

Except the 7K2 only has 2MB, 32K colors, and none of the additional features work. No data logging and stuff like that. My price for the 7K2 is 720 bucks. These list at 650.00.

I am going to have to look into these a bit closer.

They also have a model that is exactly the same as the G304K200, except it has many, many more features.

I am going to shoot this off to my customer and my Red Lion guy.

Sorry for the delay in responding to this thread. I will try to cover all of the questions and comments.

1. The K2 units will have emulator support in a future release of the software. We aren't trying to keep a feature from our users, but instead we needed to get software support out quickly for the new hardware.

2. I am not aware of any emulator issues in build 502 on the other models. Please feel free to follow up with me at [email protected] with any information you have.

3. At this time the extra hardware on the kadets is not functional. The Maple version has access to this additional hardware because they use the base OS from the source vendor.

4. We share hardware with Maple because we outsource the hardware from the same vendor. However only when you purchase the panel from Red Lion do you get access to the powerful crimson software.

5. Ken if you follow this link and sign up for our company news letter you will receive an email notification on new products so you won't be in the dark anymore. http://www.redlion.net/forms/signup.html

Thanks
Jeremy

Sorry to get slightly off topic but I’m having an issue with one of my databases in Crimson 3.0. When I click on Web Server in the navigation pane Crimson crashes. It will work fine otherwise and other databases don’t seem to have this issue. Maybe something is missing or corrupted in the database. I am running the latest version of Crimson 3.0 in a Windows XP virtual machine.

I would avoid running the software on a virtual machine as this is not a recommended method. If you still have trouble with the database in a native OS please send the database to me at [email protected]

Thanks
Jeremy

Jeremy,

I've been running Crimson on VMWare for months along with many other programs and rarely have an issue. I don't think that is the problem.

Randy A.

Update: Just to follow-up. Red Lion tech support looked at my database and discovered I had some invalid tag references in the web server. They removed these tags and that fixed the problem.

I am suprised sometimes, that more troubleshooting and manuals haven't gone to a Wiki format for companies.

A wiki on the vender site would be great. A generic one like this site would be even better. The trick would be organization and moderation so they could be found. Some may be only allowed notes, some examples, and the trustworthy, could crreate, edit and make corrections.

I just saw a demo of the new Redlion G3 Kadets. It has a very low price (AD low) and looks great. It is plastic but most cheap screens are now...
