If you are wanting to step towards a more hands on approach, download AB Micro Starter Lite as well as RS500 Emulate. This will give you more familiarity with actual software that is in use. Don't get me wrong, the simulators can be a great asset for testing programs, but fail to give you knowledge and experience with actual software.

Just my 2 cents

Beckhoff Twincat is for free. You can compile and run your code on your PC.

codesys and twincat are legally free, oke they work only for 2 hours. Simulation works even longer.
