We just got a new laptop that does not have a serial port. We tried a USB to serial adapter to no avail.. does anyone have a solution to connect Modicon Micro PLCs to USB?

Modsoft is very timing dependent.

The usb to serial converters add gaps between the characters so that Modbus usually won't work. These gaps are added between the USB packets. Try reducing the bit rate :( Since the gaps are measured in character times, the gaps the USB introduce may not look as big proportionately.

It is sad. We were trying to run Modsoft 2.6 from a WinXP computer using VirtualPC and a virtual DOS 6.22. That didn't work either. WinXP with a 2.4 GHZ pentium can't even keep the character gaps small. This is why ( only one of many reasons ) I prefer to use DF1 on our products over Modbus. We offer Modbus too but it is a second choice because MODBUS is not an industrial strength protocol:(

We didn't really want to program Modicons anyway.

Don't forget about drivers. If your software only talks to serial ports you may not even be able to use a convertor.

Peter, your problem has probably not as much to do with Modbus as does with MODSOFT. I have many programs working on my computer with WIN XP and serial Modbus protocol.

There is a new cable from Schneider that works ref. TSX PCX 3030. I have one with me in this moment.

You can also try to change one of the comunication parameters "Link timeout" or "RX/TX Delay" to 0 or 1.
This should work with some adapters.

We ended up buying a 3030 cable. We could not get the 1030 to work with any USB adapter. Thanks all!
