I see about 10 different versions of 5000, of course the AB dealer first quoted me the Full Edition for $6290! What is the minimum version that will allow me to write a simple ladder program and upload it to the PLC?

What you'll find in that PDF is that the Mini Edition may suit your needs; it supports CompactLogix and it supports Relay Ladder Logic.

It does not support the full-size ControlLogix and does not support the Function Block, Structured Text, or Sequential Function Chart languages.
