Visual Studio no longer free

For individuals
Any individual developer can use Visual Studio Community to create their own free or paid apps.
For organizations
An unlimited number of users within an organization can use Visual Studio Community for the following scenarios: in a classroom learning environment, for academic research, or for contributing to open source projects.
For all other usage scenarios:
In non-enterprise organizations, up to five users can use Visual Studio Community. In enterprise organizations (meaning those with >250 PCs or >$1 Million US Dollars in annual revenue), no use is permitted beyond the open source, academic research, and classroom learning environment scenarios described above.
For more information, see the Visual Studio Community license terms.
So, make sure you don't install it on large enterprise computers. If your company has >USD1m in revenue, you cannot use it. This will effect the use of AdvancedHMI, possibly others.

USD500 for professional from the store.

To use the community edition in an "organisation", you will have to release your software with an OSI approved licence, and I am not sure if AdvancedHMI modified GPL licence is compatible.

Did anyone see this coming in 2005 when Microsoft first released VS Express?

I never bothered looking into it... but coming from MS it doesn't surprise me at all.

Make it free, get people to use it and kind of get hooked to it, then put a price on it.

Advanced HMI seems one party to be impacted by it, but what about the IDE's like the Advanced Workbench that are based on it?

It seems you can still get Express, which is free.

I suspect as this is the last one, they will develop VSCode to support VB.NET and then push you to that in the next version.

AdvancedHMI remains unaffected. Community edition can be used for AdvancedHMI because its primary license is GPL. The "modified" version is only an additional clause stating that all original components must remain as part of the solution when distributed, even if they are not used.

There are 2 support DLLs that are licensed under a separate license that states they can be used with and only with the GPL licensed AdvancedHMI project.

I think nothing has changed from two years ago:

You're right. In the Visual Studio Express page you can read:

Quote:
*Visual Studio Express 2017 is available for Windows Desktop developers. This will be the final version of Visual Studio Express, and there will not be a UWP or Web offering of Visual Studio Express 2017. We encourage all users to look at the free development options offered by Microsoft such as Visual Studio Code and Visual Studio Community for future development needs.
