Does anyone have any experience with any all in one plc+HMI packages? or maybe even smart relays.

I am just looking for something simple with 8 in 8 out.
it only needs to display a couple of alarms and have a couple of timer settings

I have used smart relays to control storage tank agitators. The agitators needed to run a few minutes once per hour, but would cause issues if ran all the time. Run time was adjustable from small HMI screen.

Software was free.

I think that the integrated display in the smart relays may be a bit limiting, unless the application is very simple. You have a few lines of text display, and you only have arrow keys, not a full keyboard or touch.
Just because of that I would go for the a Siemens S7-1214C plus KTP400. That should be approx. 1000 € list price. The difference to a Siemens LOGO with display and expansion module would be approx. 600 € which is the same as 1 day of work.

Unitronics and Proface are some of the most knowns HMI+PLC combined in one. They scale from some I/Os to modular configurations.

The smart relays ive found so far have too limiting of a screen, usually able to display one readout, i need somewhere in the realms of 2 changeable timers, 4 alarms and 2 selector buttons on the screen so i dont think a smart relay would cover it.

I assume the siemens stuff would require TIA portal or something along those lines?

I am looking at unitronics and it looks promising, just trying to find some more info on their software

They have two separate software now, with their newest Unilogic software having a lot more options for their higer end PLCs. I never used it but met one of their sellers.

I used their older software Visilogic once in a small project when I started working, it is still used for their basic brand , it was ladder only (maybe it changed later) and you could download it for free. It had timers, PID functions, PWM outputs and a SMS sending module.

Used them, but I'm against them, as from my experience the weakest element in all automation components is HMI backlight and after that HMI screen. With OPLC you are without everything, with separated OP and PLC, production doesn't stop.
