I'm building a hydraulically-operated tractor-mounted boom that will be used to read temperatures within bulk material piles. To simplify the control of the boom, I would like to incorporate joystick control, but I also want to keep it as safe, simple and inexpensive as possible.

I'm looking for a multi-function joystick with discrete outputs (Up, Down, Left, Right), as opposed to some of the more readliy-available joysticks with hall-effect. Do any of you know of a source at a reasonable price? I have received one quote for several thousand US$, which is just not seasible for a prototype.

The reason I want discrete outputs is so I can utilize a small, inexpensive PLC without having to resort to analog inputs, or other "specialty" modules.

I've considered a gaming-style USB joystick, perhaps using something like an Arduino as an intermediate output mapper, but this adds to the complexity and introduces a potential point of failure.

Thanks.

We may as well include the Schneider version too.
