I'm hoping someone here with more knowledge of this than me can help answer this. Would there be any effect on the safety of a machine if a laser safety scanner is used to guard the entry point of a machine instead of light curtains. The specifics are that the scanner is a SIL 3, Category 3 device, while the curtain is SIL 3, Category 4 device. Assuming that both devices would be interfaced to the machine the same way with each of the two safety outputs energizing a seperate force guided relay with monitoring, how is one better than the other? The reason for asking is that I have bought and installed a laser scanner on a machine to replace a light curtain, and I am now having to defend why the scanner is as safe.
