Need advice on Serial connection

Hi Eric
I bought it in Sydney from the Omron distributor. Sleepy Wombat is my techincal contact. It is branded Omron and the CD is branded Omron.
Device Manager reports Omron CS1W-CIF3*
Driver Provider Omron
Driver Date 1/02/2002
Driver Version 1.0.2101.0
Manufacturer Omron
Location on Omron USB HS Serial Converter
USB Controller Omron USB HS Serial Converter
From all that I can only assume that Omron are the manufacturers, although I suppose one never really knows. However, re-badged product normally installs as the real brand and not the re-badged brand.
With the mooted release of Omron PLCs with USB ports I guess they have been playing around with this for sometime. The driver date would indicate this. They typically release these things in Japan first to selected customers so that they can sort out any bugs close to home. Makes sense. Many products are Japan release only and they do not even have English manuals for some things.
Hope this helps. Maybe Jay knows about them.

Good News!...

I picked up a Keyspan USA-19HS USB-Serial adapter today (and, while I was in the 'buying' mode, an 802.11g wireless card for my notebook!)...

I just tried it with the Mitsubishi and Beijers stuff, and it works!... (y)

Thanks you, Ken (and others) for recommending the Keyspan. I really like the fact that it has a removable (and therefore REPLACEABLE!) USB cable... :nodi:

I'm off to update Norm's thread in an attempt to keep this info in one location.

P.S. to Bob... Thanks for the info on the Omron unit. Hopefully, I won't need one now...

isnt it amazing that the newest laptops cant even run old dos stuff that used a simple serial port without requiring more friggin dongles...I still prefer to use dos software whenever possible, and old toshiba 21XX laptops- and if it gets dropped in the coolant, toss it and grab another one(20-$50 for nice used one)...Dos NEVER CRASHES, starts up quick, and does the job, and usually find the old keyboard commands easier than anykind of a 'mouse' control if in a messy area with coolant/chips flying...
We've only got one SLC-500 left, cant wait for it to go away...some people love them, but I personally dont like anything about them. the truck wheel prestress machine its on gets set up for weird prototypes way too often, and every time we reconfigure the machine for some off the wall process, I just dread it...its not anything different than any other machine, but the thing is just 'awkward' feeling, and the ladder printouts look as ugly on paper as on the screen.
We had some micrologix (RIP) with like 8 I/O, yet input 1 was "I:0.0/0"-- 7 digits?? Whats wrong with "X0" like Fanuc/Aromat, many others...and "XIC- examine if closed"...what wrong with just 'normally open'?
Sorry, I didnt mean to start bashing AB, they are one of the few American plc's, and a lot of people like them... like the ford vs chevy arguements, to each his own...I just really hate the way all the big/new laptops/software although 1000 times more powerful, cant 'handle' the old 8bit **** in standard trim- remember when an OPERATING SYSTEM AND APPLICATION could fit on one floppy and never crash, and worried so much about memory wasting that they caused the y2k problem by using 2 digit year codes...the new systems cant be that complex, i think the programming has just gotten so sloppy that the os has gotten huge and riddled with bugs/patches...looks pretty, but so does a lamborghini- but an old truck is still a better work vehicle...sorry for the rant
