New laptop

Oh, and as far as the "real serial or die" crowd, you need to start planning for the inevitable. The 9 pin serial port is definitely on its way out. USB is by far much better.

The USB port may be better, but when you have to support machines in the field that may be 20 years old, that doesn't help me after I have flown there and can't connect.

My thought is that my new laptop should last 3-5 years. Buy then, a lot of the older stuff will be out of the field and USB will be a more accepted solution.

I feel for you Rick. The company I work for has only been using plcs for about 15 years and the machines that were built then are having to replace their plcs due to product obsolescence (SLC-150, Omron S3D8, to name a couple). Everything else I have out there handles the usb-rs232 adapters with no problems.

Bought a Dell D810 few months ago. Nice machine. Had a weird Windows lockup, but Dell's tech support walked me though the whole process of fixing it.
It was pricey, but so far, worth it.
It's a bit heavy, but all in all, not too bad.
