I am planning an interface to a VFD over 3000' from the PLC and wonder if there is any way I can protect the input's (120V pump run) and outputs (120v Pump start) (4-20 ma speed) from lightning.

The lines are run outside plant via O/H lines and also in manholes U/G. My 1st thought is to use gas tube type protectors similar to tele/data users have. Any thoughts?
