SLC 5/03 - HMI/PLC Connection

Customer has a SLC 5/03 with some custom HMI with its own IO driver.

When the HMI is running, i cannot use RSLogix 500 as the Serial Port is "Busy".

Anyone run into this before ? Is there anyway around this ? I guess the other option would be to buy a 1747-UIC and then add another serial port. Just wondering if there is a way without that.

A 1747-UIC is an alternative but you have to be in front of your computer in order to use RSLogix 500. May be the best option is to interface HMI to slc using DH485 port and leave slc serial port free to be used with rslogix 500 and df1 protocol.
Another alternative is to use a 1762-net-eni this module converts slc500 serial port into an ethernet port. This way you can use your software and HMI at the same time but you have to change your HMI interface from serial to ethernet. BTW you will need a data comm switch too.

The 1747-UIC is a good way to go. I think it’s always a good idea to be at the PLC when connecting with it for programming.
