I've been asked by a customer, to upgrade a machine, which has a Single 3Phase AC motor. This single motor gives turn to different segments of the machine, lets say segment A, B, C, & D.

Each segment receives the turning force in its INDEXING GEARBOX, which in turn operates these segments. (Some INDEX at a ration of 1:6 some at 1:8) etc. the current (slow) output of machine is 120 pcs per minute.
By index I mean a segment rotates a certain degree, say 60degrees, stops, turns another 60degs., stops, and so on (in case of a 1:6 gearbox ratio)

Problem is when one of the Segment is Mechanically jammed, this can be at times be disastorous, as there are none Clutch or dis-engaging mechanism inbetween (nor can be because of the design).

However, new models of similar machines, consist of Drives given to each of this segments individually!
Gives more reliability, Lesser Noise and lesse maintenance, at a much higher speed too!
My client wants me to replace these Noisy gearboxes, with individual Drives, controlled by a Master Encoder (I suppose!)

I seek assistance as to what I am looking at, any help would be apprecaited, as I have no expertise for this type of application.

Also I understand SERVO and Stepper, both can perform this function, but what would be the Pros/Cons, in this case.
I have total freedom to select the product/brand, etc
