Hmmm, how about a pair of well placed string pots or similar analog distance sensors? If the thing-a-majiggy gets caddy-wampus you can set the limit for difference between readings at which you shut 'er down.

I proposed that but since this is a "want" and not a "need" they didn't want to spend the $ on measuring devices and extra analog inputs.

"want" and "didn't want" in the same sentence means they want it, but aren't prepared to pay for it.

but since it has come up as a "want", i would say that they "need" it, because it is a problem they have to overcome.

leave it to the bean counters, when they come back and state that they categorically need to know the hydraulic cylinder has moved, because that is what is costing them down-time, then tell them how much it will cost to determine this absolutely...
