Basic operational priciples of a thumbwheel

As a newbie in PLC, I would like to start by asking for infomation on the way a thumbwheel switch operates and how is it wired to a PLC??

Though Ron's info is quite comprehernsive, it doesn't hurt to have several explanations of the same thing. Attacheed is a short explanation that I wrote for some techs.
