So even on the older Ethernet cards they used 9 pin 232 type sockets ?.

Probably DB15, not DB9. DB15 was the ethernet connection type before BNC and RJ45.
I believe that every DB15 Ethernet is supposed to connect to BNC or RJ45 with a so-called AUI (wikipedia)

went out to Siemens distributor for a quote for the cables per the boss.
waiting for a reply.
if he doesn't answer soon, i will try to go the route suggested earlier.

Jesper you are right, it is 15 pin you just jogged my memory this had some type of active components in it, powered by 24v, the original was quite large but the one we replaced it with was this

going to talk to a Siemens Contact for verification on a few things.
the local rep says use a usb to serial converter cable.

The sios support is a really good resource for Siemens specific info. Their support ticketing system is also really good, I typically got a call or email in an hour without having to pay for any sort of tech support agreement.
