I cannot get my Step 5 V7.12 (running on XP pro) communicating.

I have a BRAINBOXES pcmcia/serial card and some USB/serial adaptors, I have configured Step5 to communicate on COM1,2,3,and 4 with all the hardware options.

I have tried to turn UART and FIFO off.

I have looked at a earlier thread on this site and tried the suggestion there.

Still no good.

I know my COMMS lead works (with an old laptop) and my processor port (S5-100U CPU103) port is good.

Am I wasting my time with this laptop or does somebody have a solution?

I am running ver. 7.2, with XP and directly from the serial port. It works fine. I think your issue is the USB converter.
