EDS File Identity

Hi There,

I have an intrestingquestion.
Does anybody know whether there is a specific "Identity" reserved for different EDS Files.
For example in Allen-Bradley you will find that "0001000E00381200.EDS" is for a 1756 CPU; and "0001000C003A0400.EDS" is for a 1756-ENBT; and
"0001000C00120600.EDS" is for a DeviceNet card.

Are there method in the madness of numbers?

Just a thought, but any input will be appreciated.

There is no required naming convention for EDS files; I've seen dozens named "1.eds" or "RTENCABL.eds".

Rockwell Software used to place them in a folder structure, but that was a little too complicated to search, so with RSNetworx they have settled on a naming convention that expresses four of the the ODVA Identity Object values.

For your examples:

0001000E00381200.EDS
0001 = Vendor ID 1, Allen-Bradley
000E = Device Type = Programmable Controller
0038 = Device Code = 1756-L63
12 = Major Revision 12
00 = Minor Revision 00

While the minor revision can be encoded into an EDS, I've always seen zero in that field.
