IN PLC Digital input(DI) 32 bit & Digital output(DO) 32 bit means what?

DI senses an input (perhaps a proximity or micro switch).
DO can drive an Output (perhaps a solenoid valve via a solid state relay).
32 bit in reference to DI's or DO's is the number of inputs or outputs available on a particular module. (DI 32 bit means 32 Digital Inputs).
