Hi all,
I am going to change an existing Beckhoff I/O system that currently is using CanOpen to Devicenet. I've been trying to figure out the layout of the data I will see on devicenet coming from a rack of Beckhoff I/O through a BK5220 Bus Coupler. The analog I/O makes sense, two bytes for each channel. The digital I/O makes no sense to me. They are allocating a bit for each channel of digital.

Taken from their manual:
When the last analog output terminal in the terminal strip has received its
data, the digital outputs are served. Data is always transferred in the form
of bytes, so the next byte from the data string contains data for 8 digital
outputs. Bit 0 and bit 1 are assigned to channels 1 and 2 of the first digital
output terminal after the Bus Coupler. Other types of terminal which are
located in between are ignored.
Bits 2 and 3 go to the 2 channels of the second digital output terminal, bits
4 and 5 to the third and bits 6 and 7 to the fourth.

Any have any experiance with this and can help me understand?

thanks,
Jerry

No, POS7 means position 7 where is one two channel output card. So First cards (first output cards, there are input cards before that in manual's example) two outputs are 12.0 & 12.1 (byte 12's bits 0 and 1).

POS8 is again two channel output card etc.

Ah, so their definition of a channel is a single point. A 2 channel input card is two points, not 8 or 16 like I was thinking.

That makes some sense now.

Although technically you may be right, I somehow cannot link the word "channel" to a discrete line.

Well, i cannot understand what line has to do with it?

Think about "discrete signal channel" and "analog signal channel" and generally "signal channel" does it not make sense to you?
