Does anyone know if you can replace hardwired interlocks (high gas, low gas, fan on, over temp, etc.) for burner management systems with a safety PLC? I have an oven system with multiple zones and this would eliminate a panel full of interlock relays. I'm not trying to replace the BMS, just the interlocks by wiring them straight to safety input cards, series them in the plc and energize a safety output to the BMS. From this old thread it appears not but 8 years later, I'm hoping there's changes where you can use a safety plc without all the red tapes.

The major question is how your system is governed by NFPA 86, the "Burner Code".

There was a good post on the topic a while ago, here:

NFPA 86 was updated in 2011 to include a section on programmable controls. If you plan to do this in-house, that's where you have to start.

I think you'll find that some of the functions, like high-gas and overtemperature, still have to be hardwired.

This is one of the few areas where I always defer to a qualified consultant.
