Tried communicating with a slc504 from box, fault led flashing to indicate no program. I am using the USB connection. I have tried both drivers UIC and the rs232 DF1 to no avail. Am I missing something. I followed the instructions that came with processor.

The 1747-UIC is not a general-purpose USB to serial adapter; its two network ports (one RS-232, one RS-485) run only the Allen-Bradley Data Highway 485 (DH-485) protocol.

While that protocol is a Channel 0 serial port option on the SLC-5/04 controller, if the controller is new out of the box, its serial port is set up for the more common DF1 Full Duplex protocol.

To communicate with this controller from a computer that has only USB, you're going to need a general-purpose USB/RS232 converter. The one that I strongly recommend is the Keyspan/Tripplite USA-19HS.
