S5 experts -> S5 IP264 to S7

I've been asked to replace old control system based on S5.
I've encountered S5 IP 264 6ES5264-8MA11 CAM Control Module.

Client asks for S7-1200 based configurations. Can I replace it with just simple HSC on S7-1200 ? There is only A/B encoder connected to encoder-IN port.

you must analyze the software how the data from the module is used.

The problem is that PLC is totally broken - no source code, no documentation, no possibility to even upload.

So you must reverse-engineer a detailed description about how the machine must work.
That will also answer what hardware is required.

S7-1200 can connect A/B encoders.
