A-B CompactLogix 1769-L30ER memory backup question

1769 CompactLogix Batteries
The 1769-L23x and 1769-L3x controllers come with one 1769-BA lithium battery.
The 1768 controllers and the CompactLogix 5370 controllers do not require a battery. The controller uses internal nonvolatile memory to store its program during shutdown. Energy that is stored in the system maintains controller power long enough to store the program to internal nonvolatile memory, but not the external CompactFlash card nor SD card respectively

Battery-less Energy Storage Solution...

The CompactLogix 5370 controllers use an internal Energy Storage Module (ESM) to do what Garry has described.

Non TechConnectors...

For a project using a 5370 CompactLogix controller, RSLogix 5000 still lists "Battery" as a minor fault and this fault can still be triggered for these controllers. This fault (Type 10 Code 14) refers to an ESM fault rather than a Battery fault. It can be monitored by using a GSV to the FaultLog Object, Attribute MinorFaultBits, bit 10. Because the ESM is not replaceable, this fault would mean replacing the controller.

572844 - Major Fault Type 1 code 40 in a Logix 5000 controller
Access Level: TechConnect

Non TechConnectors...

If you get a Major Fault: Type 1 Code 40 it is a Major Fault on power up. This means that the last time the controller was powered down the ESM failed to store the project to the internal NAND flash memory. It is most likely a hardware failure of the ESM and it is not charging or holding its stored energy.

The Minor Faults: Type 10 Code 12, 13, 14, 15 will all set the Battery Minor Fault and are an indication that there is an issue with the ESM.

The Major Fault will of course halt the processor, the Minor Faults will leave it running.

George
