Looking for knowledge if it is possible to connect a PC through a 1747-PIC ser A to a SLC 5/04 8 pin mini din (DH485).
Everything I have looked into says this should work. I did connect with a 1756-CP3 cable but the 9 pin is used for a HMI which I would like to keep interfacing and go on-line. I don't have a PCMK or 1747-CP3 cable for USB port.
What I have and know:
IBM Thinkpad with Windows 2000 Professional
version 5.0.2195 service pack 4 build 2195
Real Serial Port
Do not run RSLinx as a service.
Do not run PIC and DF1 drivers at the same time.
Running RSLinx Classic Gateway
I stopped the AB_DF1-1 DH485 Sta:0 Com 1 for the 1756-CP3 cable
Loaded 1747-PIC / AIC+ driver
setup as: COM1 - baud 19200 - sta 00 - max 31 Didn't check on "for com port exclusive use by this driver"
AB_PIC-1 is running and I see the PIC in RSwho (of course - not connected to anything yet)

I am thinking that I can connect an 8 pin mini din (male cap) to a male RJ47 (female)plug for which to plug a 1747-C10 ser B cable into, that is plugged into the PIC.
(sorry - I wrote it and had to read it twice)

Will this work?
If so, can someone tell me what or where to go to for the pin-out for the connection of the 8 pin DH485 (at processor) to the 1747-C10 ser B cable, that is attached to the PIC?

I wish I could just take a chance and try it but there is no room for mistakes.

Also, I learned that RS485 and ethernet (8-pin) cable jacks are not the same. I can see no difference. What is the difference? For this temp setup, I would like to use an 8 pin female ethernet plug to plug the 1747-C10 cable into. What should I expect if I do this?

I am new to this site and find it very helpful. So far all of my knowledge has come from old threads. I am impressed with what I have learned with the many searches.

Of course this starts me thinking. If this is possible, then can I connect to a PLC 5/40 in the same manner? I plan to make a 1784-CP10 cable anyway. No problem with using this. This was just a thought.

Thanks, ahead of time

No! Do not plug anything into that mini-din port except the 1784-CP7 DB-9 to mini-din adapter for the 1784-PCMK card or you will damage the comm port. The only interface you can use on a SLC 5/04 Ch. 1 is one of the DH+ devices (PKTX/PCMK). The PIC is DH-485 and will not work. I have had customers sitck the mini-din end of their MicroLogix serial cables into the mini-din of their 5/04 and render them useless. The same thing applies to the mini-din of PLC-5's; they're DH+ ONLY as well.

The "mini din" on a SLC 5/04 is not DH485, it is DH+, and you cannot connect with a PIC. You will need additional hardware, I don't remember the part numbers off hand, but I believe they are 1784-PCMK or 1784-KT(X).

thats why were here it saves everyones bacon as no one can know everything in this industry welcome aboard
