okedy dokey its all working now.
Heres what to do for future reference:
1. Add 1756DHRIO/d module to IO as a series C with keying off
2. remove and insert module
3. do the msg instruction.
4. Remove the module from the IO listing.
my problem was the max connections in the module where set to 4 which stopped this one working as there where 4 open already.
