Have you ever noticed...

Which way is it, anyway?

If you have an Allen-Bradley, you download a program from your PC to the Processor. You upload a program from the Processor to the PC. Since I do not Download any music from the Internet, for fear of copyright infringement, I just Download other "free" stuff. Or, occasionally I do pay for some downloads such as Symantec or the like. I always figured the direction of data flow was from the higher form of system to the lower form of system. From the PC to the PLC is down, and from the Internet to the PC is down also. May not make much sense, but makes me feel good. Just my opinion!

It was explained to me this way

The direction of transfer (upload/download) is based on the dominant or more capable device. In the case of a PLC, the dominant device is the PC (it can control the PLC not the other way around). When it comes to the Internet, you can specify which file you want but you can only download what the server or URL will let you download. Thus your pc becomes the "non dominant" device.

I was told they are hierarchical terms.

May or may not be true but it does seem to follow that sort of logic.

Personally I think its a matter of perspective.

If you are on the reciveing end you are downloading.

If you are on the transmitting/sending end you are uploading.

I view my laptop as ME. and the plc as an outside enity.

For instance The sire uploads to the mare. In the same action the mare downloads from the sire. (if you get my meaning)

However not all PLC manufactures see it my way......

It is my understanding that download and upload are historical artifacts from the old days, when computers were mainframes and you transferred data from the big boy DOWN to a local terminal. You would transfer data from the lowly local terminal UP to the mainframe. Therefore, looking at the most capable device as the main device and loading DOWN FROM it or UP TO it would be correct.

randy

I did download a few songs a couple years ago, could never find enough stuph I wanted to listen to, If I did find it, most of the time it sounded terrible.

I did "download" AB PicoSoft for FREE, which seems to work on most, if not all "easy" relays

I did "download" software from entertron for FREE

I did find some GE software and did "download" it for FREE

So, when we "download" for FREE, we must be...FREE LOADERS

Sorry, been a slow month, I just HAD to do that one...

When I sit at the dinner table I upload. When I sit on my camode I download. I guess this means means my dinner is higher than I am, while I am higher than my cr@p. I hope this clariffies the situation.

So, when you do get around to downloading these songs to your PLC, which songs would they be ?

'Control' by Janet Jackson seems a good start. Or if there's any guys out there specialising in burners how about 'Control The Flame' by the Lightning Seeds. And when you're debugging some ladder, there's nothing worse than 'Contact In Red Square' by Blondie.

We've only scratched the surface . . .

Regards,

Ken.
