Omron RS232 on Device Net

I've got a DRT1-232C2 module. The 4 page version of the manual says it works with explicit messaging. I'm not even sure I know what that is. Can anybody point me to a manual that will tell me what I need to know about this module to communicate through it to and from a PC?
