I'm doing my first project using profibus. I'm bringing in reading from Siemens 7SJ6 realy to a SLC500 via a prosoft card. Looking for some good docuements on how profibus addressing works. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Got the GSD file and went thru the 146 set up but could not download the program kept getting error 401, I might not have the correct null cable. Will hit it again on Monday.

Finally got the communication working. The GSD file I was using was incorrect. 7SJ6 relay vers 3 and below take one file and Vers 4 and above take another. Now I just need to figure out SLC 500 sample program and hopefully I'm in the clear.

Hi and welcome to the forum!

The point is that it is unpredictable. The power cables can generate el. noise in the bus cables and disturb such that the data signal is unreadable and the communication falls out sporacically.

There is a good way to fix it; using fibre optic with OLM's from Siemens https://www.automation.siemens.com/...nts/Pages/network-components.aspx?HTTPS=REDIR

Or these fiber plugs from Helmholz: http://www.ade.no/Produktsider/optopus.html

Or a Q&D way is to change the DP profile to 'user defined' and increase the retry limit to a (much) bigger number. The update time will increase, the data exchange will be more robust but your system will still be unpredictable.

Maybe you also should have a look at a Profibus analyzer f.x. from Procentec: http://www.procentec.com/profitrace2/
