There's a reset button behind the SD slot you can hold for some period that does a "Stage 2" reset to factory firmware.

OK, flashing direct on the controller's ethernet port and not across the backplane got v35 back on it.
Flashing v36 directly on the controller's ethernet port did work.
The lesson here is, DO NOT try to flash v36 across the backplane.
