I shipped out a 1769-L36ERM system a while back and need to update the software. I've been looking to see if this is possible with the SD card. It seems like the Logix 5000 software is still needed to load from the SD card at the site(?) I have another CompactLogix system here to load to the SD card if that's how it's done.

I would think others have done this a number of times if it's possible.
Thanks,
MM.

The SD media is intended for storing and handling of the user application(CPU program) or of the CPU firmware; you could transfer the application file from a PC to SD media without RSL5K/Studio5K (if there is an available hard copy .ACD file), however, in order for a CPU to automatically load the file from the SD slot at power-up or when no application present the controller will need to be configured to do so, using RSL5K/Studio5K that is...

Refer to information starting at Page 293 (Chapter 12) of http://literature.rockwellautomation.com/idc/groups/literature/documents/um/1769-um021_-en-p.pdf

For controller firmware update using the SD media refer to Page 115 of the above posted link; you do not need RSL5K/Studio5K to update the controller firmware via SD card.

...however, updating the firmware will erase the existing CPU user application hence RSL5K/Studio5K will be needed to backup the user application prior to the firmware upgrade and for downloading of said user application upon the firmware upgrade completion.

Yep, I do it all the time.... just load the program and version and have them power down remove the old SD, install the new and power back up, it takes a few minutes so tell them to leave it alone after they repower, then have them power back down and put the old SD back in with the slide UN-locked and power back up

Bringing this question back up as I need to be able to send out CompactLogix application updates on an SD card and have not figured out the details:

- Does the card have to be loaded in the PLC using Logix 5000 software or can the .ACD file be put in a certain directory from any laptop/computer?
- Load the program and version of what?
- What should be the Run/Remote/Program switch position?

I'm looking through this doc and just haven't found the simple steps, yet: http://literature.rockwellautomation.com/idc/groups/literature/documents/pm/1756-pm017_-en-p.pdf

GS=0x01, ES=0x0204

GS=0x01, ES=0x0204

and USB and Ethernet communication are not working.

plz help me to solve this issue

Does it go back to a solid red then repeat the sequence flash again? if yes its not fully updated on the flash

When it fails the firmware update then you need to power off the PLC and wait... not sure if the 30ERM has a battery but if yes unplug it (look on the under the cover on the side) then you need to use the USB to see if you can see the PLC and try flashing again

Hopefully its not bricked

yes repeat the sequence again, yes I cycled power

could I know how to install the firmware to sd card through PC...

I didn't have another CPU, but I can find one then how can I use it to boot firmware

Looks like its failing the complete boot up cycle, so I would say the SD is the only hope that you can save it

See here for instructions on how to load it to the SD card https://literature.rockwellautomation.com/idc/groups/literature/documents/pm/1756-pm017_-en-p.pdf

Hi,
I need to know if it is possible to update the software using the file. ACD on the SD card.
And if it is possible how do you do it?
Thanks
