So I have been trying to find an answer to this question through other posts, but I really don't have a definite answer. My new laptop (like most new laptops) does not have a serial port. This is a problem for the micrologix, and slc 5/03 and 4. It is a known fact that usb to serial adapters have problems with dropping comms. I have a 1747-UIC which is 485. In rslogix you can change your comms to 485 for the processor, but only after your online. My question is, is there any way to talk to the processor with the UIC using 232?

Short answer is NO. The UIC is strictly DH485.

I use a keyspan USB adapter when I need one, which isn't often, but I have never had a problem with it. Rockwell has a KB technote somewhere that tells users to shut off the root USB adapter power management under hardware configuration. This supposedly helps in dropping comms due to lap top power management issues. You should be able to find the tech note with a KB search.

Good idea, and I see it has worked for some. I tried it, still dropping comms though. I guess the best option is to use the usb to serial to change comms to 485, then use the UIC. A bit of a hassle and its slower, but its what works.
