At a couple of the local assembly plants, Ford got commitments from component mfgs (PLCs, motors, pnuematic controls, etc) for special discount schedules and extended warranties and that would get that mfg in the specification and Ford would be a ton of stuff to put in their crib. The equipment suppliers could then tell the distributors that they were working on such-and-such project and they would get that discount schedule and warranty for that equipment. I remember once, we would tell Ford what we needed for equipment, they would drop ship it to us and credit our invoice. That was just once and I think the accounting activity nullified any savings.
I wouldn't doubt KIA is working the same way though many of their machines may be coming from Korea or Japan.
