New here and need some SLC 500 help

Yup, baud rate, changes com ports, sta number, even an Allen Bradley PIC cable. Going to try to connect to a SLC 5/04 today with a different cable to see if its not the computer.

OK tried the slc 5/04 andnothing. Then went to a Direct Logic 105 opened directsoft using the serial port and connected just fine?????? What the heck am I doing wrong?

If you have the PIC driver installed and running it may interfere with serial communications, make sure the PIC driver is not running and a DF1 driver is running when connecting serially. Personally I delete the PIC driver when I do not need it.

I was going to show screenshots of my PIC while working but I can not get the PIC to work right now. Mine is at least 10 years old so it may have gone bad. I will fire up my old laptop later and see if it will work with it.

The PIC will not work with USB and PCMCIA to serial adapters, need a true serial port. It may be possible to make a serial (DF1) connection using PCMCIA adapters but I never had any luck with USB where Rockwell was involved.

Will see what happens later.

How are you connecting to the 5/04 and what cable did you use?

5/04 do not have an RJ45 port, just a mini-DIN and DB9. The DB9 port can be set to DF1, DH485, or ASCII. You need a standard null-modem cable. Do you have an offline ladder file to look up the channel configuration?

Have you tried a different PC?

I used the one I got that I thought was it but apparently its for a panelview. I do have a serial null modem cable that I bought a long time ago. I don't have a offline ladder file to look at for this particular machine. So I'm going to try the null modem cable on the slc 5/04 tomorrow. I do have an offline ladder file for the slc500 that I'm trying to get into. Will it tell me something about the 1747-PIC driver setup?

OK used a null modem cable today and got right into a SLC 5/04 using the DF-1 driver. So it's obvious now the issue is with my 1747-PIC/AIC+ driver. Can this be resolved by getting a new driver?

You did not offer details on your laptop, if it has W2K or XP then it may have problems with a PIC. The PIC does not like ACPI or power management on the newer type computers. There are technotes etc on this at the AB knowledgebase. THe PIC must use either com1 or com2.

To give an example I connected my L40 with PIC to my desktop that has XP, never got them to communicate but Linx was taking the port.

This morning I connected the L40 with PIC to my old laptop running Win98SE, once I installed the PIC driver RSLinx displayed the L40 and I went straight online with it. The old laptop has RSL 5.00.00 and RSLinx ver. 2.30. I used COM1, 19200, Station number 00, and Max number 31. Basic default settings.

I will see if I can get the old laptop connected to my network then take screen shots of the setup. I created this video http://www.patchn.com/ab_plc_flasher.htm using that L40D with the PIC, note when creating the file I selected an L30.

Its a toshiba satellite pro 4600 Win 2000. I have been reading about the issues with the power management and ACPI, and infrared. I have disabled ACPI in window but not in the BIOS yet.

mini-DIN and DB9 could only be communicated via a AB 1784 PCMK B(This is s PCMCIA card), and a 1784-PCM5/B Cable, Since you are using a SLC 5/04 CPU
That is a DH+ Communication protocol. At your RSLINX goto Configure driver, then select 1784...., the add new, then at the VALUE select PCMK, then rty to play the station Add. and the DH+ Speed. for you to find the maching, station and spped.

Good day

Aren't these 1747-PIC threads nutty ?

Glad to hear the port is functional; that's one thing out of the way. If you had a port conflict (DirectSoft, PalmSync, another RSLinx driver) then RSLinx would let you know with a "could not open COM port" kind of message.

Don't concern yourself with baud rates; I've seen one 9600 baud DH485 network in fifteen years. DH485 runs at 19200, and virtually always using Node 00 for your computer is the right thing.

So you're going to have to focus on the various things about your computer's BIOS and OS that could interfere with the PIC driver. You've already been through the "run RSLinx as a service" part of the PIC driver saga.

If you have a fast Internet connection, try downloading RSLinx Lite 2.43 from the Rockwell Software support site. 2.30 was the first edition that supported the PIC under Win2K, and there have been a handful of changes. I would stick with 2.43 until you need one of the 2.50 or 2.51 features (Micro 1100 or CIP/USB).

This sort of little interface detail is the kind of thing that Rockwell distributors are generally very good about assisting with. Most Arizona cities have Border States Electric as their A-B dealers, and they have a group of very good automation specialists.

Been through all the ACPI, power management, infrared, BIOS, computer resources, etc..... They payed me all day today to sit around and pull my hair out. I didnt mind of course but I still dont have it fixed. I called Border States and talked to a guy there who understood what I was talking about but he pointed me right to the knowledge base where I already had my head buried for hours. What is the going price if I download version 4.3?

RSlinx lite is free. Not a bad price
